During the teacher strike, this cast and crew of students practiced singing and dancing, built the set, practiced their instruments, coached and directed each other for hours, but most importantly they did so together. I loved that during the time that the teachers were protesting, this group of amazing students protested themselves. They commandeered the theater of East High and ran their own version of a school, a school where their voices and their passions could finally be embodied through self-direction and collaboration. This is what we crave in theater. But more importantly, it is the passion of all teachers to see students thinking for themselves, and becoming self- motivated, passionate independent thinkers, who are willing and able to fight for their goals. To our teachers that fought and to our students who continue to fight, thank you. The opportunity that you granted this theater was unforeseeable and unforgettable. What a magical job I have been endowed with, one that has shown me what students are truly capable of. It is my hope that you may become privy to the unwavering willpower and loyalty that all students possess through this, our production of Pippin.
